Volvo is taking major steps towards a greener, cleaner roadway.

Volvo Cars has announced that by 2019, all of the company’s vehicles will be released with electric motors. The goal is to completely replace the production of cars with internal combustion engines (ICE) with electric motors for a more efficient, environmentally-friendly way of driving.

The Swedish automaker plans to release five fully-electric cars by 2021; three of these vehicles will be Volvo branded, while the other two will be Polestar (further details on those vehicles to come).

Electric vehicles are popular on the market these days, but not every manufacturer provides an extensive range of options. Volvo is looking to change that with this transition. “This is about the customer,” said Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo President and Chief Executive. “People increasingly demand electrified cars and we want to respond to our customers’ current and future needs. You can now pick and choose whichever electrified Volvo you wish.”

However, not all of the vehicles on Volvo’s lineup will be fully electric. While all vehicles beginning in 2019 will have electric motors, many of them will be plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid 48 volt options, as opposed to fully-electric vehicles. In addition to its vehicles, Volvo is looking to reduce carbon emissions throughout its manufacturing operations. The automaker is planning to have climate neutral manufacturing by 2025. With all of these changes, Volvo is taking huge strides in the direction of a greener automotive industry.

It is Volvo’s hope that this will mark a moment in history for the auto world, changing the way we fuel our vehicles. “This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car,” Samuelsson noted. “Volvo Cars has stated that it plans to have sold a total of 1 million electrified cars by 2025. When we said it we meant it. This is how we are going to do it.”

Volvo’s plan to sell 1 million electric vehicles by 2025 is a bold one, but it is already putting plans in motion. Volvo has big goals for the future; just last year, it announced its plans for a self-driving Volvo to hit the market by 2021. The automaker is taking initiative, changing the auto industry one new model at a time.
