The Volvo XC60 has been the brand’s best seller since 2009, and it has today achieved a pretty significant milestone: 500,000 units sold. The XC60 is halfway to a million after just slightly over five years on the market.

‘With the XC60 we have shown that we have the ability to compete on equal terms with our German rivals like BMW and Audi, and it gives us strength to do the same with future models,’ says Alain Visser, Senior Vice President Marketing, Sales and Customer Service at Volvo Cars. “This is a car that is not only a success today but will continue to be one in future.”

Since going on sale in 2008, the Volvo XC60 has been firmly entrenched at the heart of the automaker’s lineup. In 2012, it crossed 100K annual sales with a total of 106,203 units sold. Last year, the XC60 moved more than 114,000 units, largely helped by Volvo’s increasing presence in the ultra-competitive Chinese automotive market.

During the first four months of 2014, 41,920 XC60s have been moved worldwide, putting the best-seller on pace for yet another record year. Among those that sold in April was the 500,000th unit, which went to one lucky driver somewhere in the United States. So if you bought a Volvo XC60 last month, you may well be holding on to a piece of history.

The new Volvo XC60 has earned points with critics and drivers alike for its premium-feel interior and powerful performance. The 2015 model has been the subject of great anticipation thanks to its available turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter inline-four, which generates 302 horsepower while drastically increasing fuel economy.
