One of the most important parts of a young person’s life is when they decide what they actually want to be when they grow up. While for years little girls and boys said that they want to be pirates and royalty, there comes a time when you have to choose something slightly more realistic. If you want to enter a field of study to help you take home a big paycheck, this month Mary Barra’s voice joined the chorus of people recommending a career in the demanding fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM for short).

Regardless of whether they decide to pursue STEM subjects as their major, Ms. Barra said in a discussion with Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg that all students should gain an understanding of coding because of the big role technology will play in every field moving forward. Besides coding, students need to invest time and resources into developing a better understanding of science and math. In today’s job market these skills are required to succeed and land jobs that are stable for a good future.

If you don’t believe Mary Barra, consider the team of editors here at The News Wheel. We all have a variety of degrees, including Marketing, Global Business, Journalism, and English. While a lot of our day is spent writing, each and every one of us has to have a basic understanding of HTML to post our articles on the website and format them properly. We also have expanded what we understand about science and engineering so that we can discuss technologies in the vehicles we talk about. If science, technology, engineering, or math has not yet crept into your part of your industry, it is on the way. It would behoove those students preparing for the workforce of the future to get ahead by studying these key fields in school.
