Alex Ovechkin reveals his desire for a 2015 Accord

1/26/2015 UPDATE: Turns out Ovechkin wanted the car for a very good cause

The 2015 NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft presented by DraftKings presents an usual challenge to famous professional athletes: the shameful burden of getting picked last for a team. Although everyone invited to the event is an all-star, somebody has to be last, which is a form of rejection that most elite hockey players probably never dealt with in gym class. So as a consolation prize, Honda—official automobile of the NHL and the 2015 NHL All-Star game in Columbus, Ohio—provides a free car (this year, a 2015 Honda Accord) to the last man standing.

On Friday night, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin wanted to be that man:

“He wanted the car, but it seems like he always gets exactly what he wants, whether it’s goals or Rocket Richard [Trophies],” said New York Rangers player Rick Nash, who acted an alternate captain for Team Toews. “The captains had a plan for that.”

Because they didn’t care for his shameless groveling, the two teams captains colluded with one another before the draft and both agreed to make Ovechkin the third-to-last pick. Unbeknownst to them, this year Honda actually decided to give a 2015 Accord to the last and next-to-last pick, which put Ovechkin right on the cusp when he was selected third-to-last by Team Foligno.

“He was lobbying to go last in the draft to get the car, so we had it planned that he was going third to last no matter what,” said Doughty, an alternate captain for Team Foligno. “He’s not too happy about it, but we made it all funny.”

The two Accords ended up going to Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Filip Forsberg, while Ovechkin left the draft empty handed, with only his $124 million contract (richest in NHL history) to comfort him.

You can see Ovechkin play in the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Game tomorrow night, Sunday, January 25th, at 5 pm on NBC Sports Network.
