Vacation Red-Band Trailer

The Vacation reboot stars Ed Helms and Christina Applegate

It had to happen sometime. In a world riddled with crappy reboots of classic films and poor adaptations of perfectly engaging books, there was bound to be a time that filmmakers would decide to take up National Lampoon’s Vacation and give it a new spin. Luckily, the new film, which stars Ed Helms, Christina Applegate, Chris Hemsworth, and Charlie Day (and features cameos from Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo), is not a remake of the original story, but instead picks up thirty years later with a grown-up Rusty, played by Helms, taking his family on a road trip back to Walley World.

Some might find this very NSFW Vacation preview (aka red-band trailer) very funny, and, to its credit, it has its moments. It does seem to lose the heart of the original Vacation, however, and replaces it with more crude jokes that just aren’t necessary.

Some of the film’s humor is unnecessarily crude

The other problem with the Vacation red-band trailer is that it appears to do what too many comedy film trailers do these days—take the funniest jokes and best content and cram it all into the trailer to get you to go see the movie. But then, when you’re watching the movie, you’re left feeling a little cheated because you already know all the funny parts. (Like the scene at the very end of this trailer, which plays on your expectations formed by the original film.)

Check out the trailer below for yourself, but remember, it’s red-band for a reason.

The filmmakers had a little fun in one scene, in which one of Rusty’s sons says, “I’ve never even heard of the original vacation,” (referencing Rusty’s childhood trip to Walley World but also the original film), to which Rusty replies, “Doesn’t matter. The new vacation will stand on its own.”

The problem is, there are many diehard fans who would probably disagree.

Vacation hits theatres on July 31st.
