What is a Mitsubishi i-MiEV?

2014 Mitsubishi i-MiEV

The little Mitsubishi i-MiEV is certainly a rare, mysterious car, but it doesn’t have to be. Not with that cute face.

The i-MiEV is the electric version of the Mitsubishi i, which is a kei car in Japan. The i-MiEV that we get in the US, however, is slightly bigger, presumably because they think we’re all fat.

According to Mitsubishi, the i-MiEV can go up to 100 miles on the Japanese test cycle, but the EPA rates it at 62 miles, which is still pretty good for your average commuter. The electric motor generates 63 horsepower and 133 lb-ft of that instant electric torque. It also offers a new feature that’s useful in natural disasters or power outages called the MiEV Power Box that lets you use the car to power small appliances for about 5 to 6 hours.

This little EV starts at $22,995 and seats four people. It has three different charging options as well–the slowest of which charges the car in 22 hours, and the fastest in as little as 30 minutes. Mitsubishi backs it up with an 8 year/100,000 mile warranty, too.

Of the 32,000 i-MiEV vehicles sold worldwide, only around 1,800 – 2,000 were sold in the US last year. Perhaps it’s still too small for us, or people don’t like the idea of driving a tiny car in a country full of pickup trucks and SUVs, as the i-MiEV only mustered a 4 out of 5 star safety rating from NHTSA.
