It’s getting warm outside, which means it’s the perfect time to grab some friends and head to a NASCAR race at your nearest speedway. But if you’re new at watching very fast cars turn left multiple times, you might be wondering what you should bring to help you better enjoy the experience. Luckily for you, we have come up with a comprehensive list of items you should bring to your next NASCAR race.

Cap and Sunglasses

The bright sun can be a real bummer when you’re trying to keep your eyes on the race. Rather than squinting and giving yourself a headache, do the smart thing and wear your favorite baseball cap and pair of sunglasses. Not only will you be able to see better; you’ll also be protecting your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays. Plus, with so many varieties of baseball caps out there, you’ll be able to stay shaded in style.

Sunscreen

Since the sun can get so strong, you want to make sure you protect your skin as well as your eyes. Bring plenty of sunscreen with you and reapply it every couple of hours to prevent burning. Don’t worry; you won’t miss the painful sunburn you’d experience if you sat in the aluminum stands for the entire race with no protection.

Food and Drinks

A NASCAR race lasts at least a few hours—more in some cases—so you’ll want to make sure you have plenty of beverages and snacks to keep you going for the duration. Glass bottles are prohibited at most speedways, so stick to cans or plastic bottles. Bringing your own food is the best course of action, but if you forget or run out there are always plenty of concessions to satiate your hunger.

Earplugs

Things can get noisy at the track, with decibel levels similar to that of an airplane engine. It’s no surprise, then, to learn that earplugs are recommended—especially if you’re bringing children along for the day. If you don’t want to wear earplugs, consider noise-deterrent headsets instead.

A Change of Clothes

Even in the heat of the summer, the weather can change at a moment’s notice. It might have been sweltering when you arrived in your shorts and t-shirt, but if it starts raining you’ll wish you brought a waterproof jacket or hoodie. Most speedways don’t allow umbrellas in the stands, since they can obstruct the view of the other fans, so make sure you plan accordingly.
