Being involved in a hit and run accident can be incredibly stressful, as you might be left feeling angry, helpless, and anxious. Being prepared for what steps to take before it ever happens can help keep you calm and prepared to take action.

What to Do in a Hit-and-Run

First, be sure to record as much as possible about the incident. If you saw it happen, you’ll be able to write down some details about the other car like color, make, model, and maybe even the drivers license number. That drivers license number is invaluable, since it’s the single thing that can identify exactly who the car belongs to. This information, along with what direction the car came from, what direction it was going, and how they damaged your car or property will help when filing a police report and the insurance claim.

If you didn’t witness the accident, make sure to write down the times you were away from your car, where your car was located, and see if anyone witnessed the hit-and-run. If you find witnesses, write down their names, addresses, and phone numbers.

Never chase a hit and run driver. While you may be angry and want to take down the bad guy yourself, you never know if a hit and run driver is in an unstable mental state, under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or just plain dangerous. Remain calm, write down everything you can remember, and call the police to file a police report.

Here is Guy S. DiMartino, auto accident attorney, with information on what to do in a hit-and-run. Laws will vary by state, but this should be a good starting place.

Hit and run scenarios are far less common than the average accident, but it’s better to be prepared for the worst case scenario in order to keep control of the situation.
