When Will We Get a BMW i8 Convertible?
The BMW i8 is a seriously cool car. Not only is it a plug-in hybrid, so it saves emissions from going into the atmosphere, but its style is ready to go toe-to-toe with the best sports cars in the automotive world. The only shortcoming it has is that there is no convertible option. When you have a car like that for cruising in the countryside or around town, it’s great to have to option of letting the wind whip through your hair. If you feel the same way we do, we have some good news: A BMW i8 Convertible could be here as soon as 2018.

According to Green Car Reports, BMW CEO Harald Krueger has said on the record that a BMW i8 convertible won’t arrive until 2018, but was unclear whether he meant the 2018 model year or calendar year. Our desire for a BMW i8 Convertible is not an unfounded dream. Back in 2013, the BMW i8 Concept Spyder rolled out in January alongside concepts of the BMW i3 and standard i8. In late 2014, BMW dumped a bucket of ice water on us when they said that they had no plans to build the BMW i8 Spyder. We were very crushed. We even used this gif.
Since then, a BMW i8 convertible was mentioned in a March press conference and the i Future Interaction concept revealed at 2016 CES was a convertible, giving us back a sliver of hope. This latest comment from Krueger makes us happy, because BMW is at least considering how the convertible would go into production. We have been burned before, though. Once we have official word from BMW, we’ll be shouting it from the rooftops.
