Having Wi-Fi capabilities in your vehicle is quickly becoming the stuff of mandate for auto buyers; Ford is adapting to the times and to demands by bringing Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities to select 2018 model-year vehicles this fall.

Ford SYNC Connect will utilize AT&T’s 4G LTE network to turn properly-equipped 2018 Ford vehicles into a hotspot that will allow up to 10 devices to be connected at any one time and provide coverage for up to 50 feet outside of the vehicle.

“SYNC Connect allows travelers to stay connected and entertained on the go,” said Don Butler, executive director, Ford Connected Vehicle and Services. “The new Wi-Fi hotspot capability will allow kids to easily watch movies and listen to music, or, if you’re on the job, to quickly send emails and access the web from wherever you are.”

AT&T customers will be able to use preexisting Mobile Share Advantage or Mobile Share Value plans for data, or a standalone plan can be purchased for non-AT&T customers. Eligible new vehicles will be offered with a three-month/three-gigabyte trial subscription. For a vehicle to qualify, it must be a 2018 model equipped with a 4G LTE modem.

“We’re proud to build on our longtime collaboration with Ford to bring the benefits of LTE and Wi-Fi connectivity to the innovative SYNC Connect platform,” said Chris Penrose, president of AT&T Internet of Things Solutions. “This will deliver the connectivity that more and more consumers want in their next car purchase.”
