For a while now, we have been covering the rather unusual partnership between German luxury automaker BMW and Japanese carmaker Toyota. The two joined forces a couple of years ago with the aim of building a new sports car that would be a replacement for both the BMW Z4 and the iconic Toyota Supra. And while we’ve heard plenty of rumors, nothing solid has come out of the partnership thus far.

Now it appears that Toyota is questioning whether or not it will actually produce the vehicle it’s spent so long developing. In an interview with Automotive News, a Toyota spokesman commented, “By the end of the year we will approve whether or not we will make it. The whole study before that, on what kind of platform, on what kind of architecture, that’s been progressing quite well. We haven’t yet decided to give the green light to the project, but it’s coming up.”

So it looks like, although Toyota has been working on perfecting its fuel cell technology while experimenting with lightweight components, the automaker hasn’t yet reached a decision as to whether or not it’ll actually make the long-awaited Supra successor. Sports car enthusiasts everywhere will surely be in a sea of misery if Toyota doesn’t come through on this project.
