I have some bad news. Are you sitting down?

According to an Australian CarAdvice interview with the BMW M2’s head engineer Frank Isenberg, there will not be a BMW M2 convertible. We really shouldn’t be that upset, as the BMW M2 is a pretty amazing car without the option to put the top down. Isenberg’s reasoning for why the car will keep its roof firmly on is actually pretty sound. When customers buy convertibles, it’s because they are dreaming of all the great cruising they will do in picturesque locations and warm weather. The BMW M2, however, is built with performance in mind. That much power isn’t necessary for a traditional convertible.

Isenberg did go on to say that there were many BMW vehicles that were perfect candidates to become convertibles, like the BMW M235i. While that car could certainly hold its own on a track, the BMW M2 would easily take it in a race with the proper driver.

A convertible BMW M2 has not been ruled out for future generations, but it sounds as if the automaker will need a lot of evidence to change its mind. Considering that the 2016 BMW M2 is quickly on its way to selling out, however, it doesn’t look as if BMW will mess with their current success anytime soon.
