Woman-Owned Car Garage Opens in Jordan

Here at The News Wheel, we have fallen in love with Patrice Banks and her Girls Auto Clinic Repair Center in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. Banks was tired of being treated poorly when she went to go get her vehicle repaired, so she learned how to be a car mechanic and opened her own shop with the goal of teaching all women to be confident when it comes to their cars. It seems as if this is part of a new wave sweeping the world, because a new woman-owned shop has opened up in the Middle Eastern country of Jordan.

Balqees Bani Hani told The Jordan Times that she has dreamed of opening her own car repair shop since childhood. That’s when she caught the automotive bug and was intrigues by all the moving parts and systems that make a car run. Like Banks, Balqees wanted her own garage so that women would be at ease when their vehicles needed repair. However, women’s discomfort in repair centers goes beyond the fear of being tricked, which is what we feel in the US. Some women in Jordan are genuinely uncomfortable because they feel vulnerable when surrounded by men.

When Balqees opened her shop in Irbid, some people in town told her that it was a radical idea and challenged society and its expectations of women. However, she gained support from her parents and other male mechanics and she feels confident in her venture. As of right now, Balqees’s shop serves only women and she looks forward to learning more about cars as time goes on (before opening the shop she took a six-month mechanic course). We wish her all the luck in the world, and we hope that more women will take the initiative to open their own repair shops.
