World Class Manufacturing Silver Designation Awarded to FCA US Detroit Engine Plant
It’s only been 15 months since the FCA US Mack Avenue Engine Plant earned a bronze designation in World Class Manufacturing, but already the plant has made remarkable strides—large enough strides to earn a silver award in the Company’s World Class Manufacturing (WCM) methodology.

The plant, which is based in Detroit, spans 1.4-million square feet, and is responsible for creating the lineup of Pentastar V6 engines—the 3.0-liter, 3.2-liter, and 3.6-liter—secured the silver award status during a two-day audit, where plant employees demonstrated “clear WCM know-how and competence through employee-conducted pillar presentations and a review of projects that have been expanded across the shop floor.”
Vying for the silver award, the plant was graded in 10 technical categories or pillars such as logistics and the environment, workplace organization, safety as well as 10 managerial categories such as commitment of the organization, clarity of objectives, management commitment, motivation of operators, and allocation of people.
“The Mack Avenue employees are to be applauded for their commitment to and focus on continuous improvement, which has resulted in being designated a silver plant in record time, an unprecedented achievement,” said Brian Harlow, Vice President – Manufacturing, FCA North America. “They have truly embraced WCM and demonstrated the proper competencies, rigor and pace that make them deserving of this designation. Their deeper understanding of the methodology and tireless efforts to expand its implementation make them a valuable resource for other plants within the FCA network.”

The Mack Avenue Engine Plant joins the silver award manufacturing club that also includes the Dundee Engine Plant in Michigan; Toledo Assembly in Ohio; Saltillo South Engine in Mexico; and Windsor Assembly Plant in Ontario, which took home the honor in March 2014 establishing it as the first North American plant to achieve such a significant distinction in manufacturing.
