Germany vs. Portugal

After an exciting weekend of football, the first match of the week sees Germany take on Portugal. The two teams are in Group G—otherwise known as the Group of Death because of the unusual number of highly-acclaimed teams. While both teams are strong, Germany would appear to have the upper hand after scoring 25 goals to Portugal’s 16 in qualifying rounds, and winning nine matches to Portugal’s three. However, the most important question here is this—who will win the World Cup of Cars: Germany vs. Portugal edition?

Germany vs. Portugal: 2015 Volkswagen Golf

In true form, Germany offers the popular and German-made Volkswagen Golf. This capable hatchback is a favorite of drivers worldwide—a fact of which Germany is extremely proud. The Golf hasn’t seen as much success Stateside as in the rest of the world, and we can’t imagine why. Available as a three- or five-door hatchback, the Golf has been in production since 1974. About to enter its seventh generation in the United States, the 2015 Golf is lighter and better equipped with standard features like a 5.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and Bluetooth connectivity. Numerous choices between gasoline and diesel engines make the Golf extremely versatily, with the 2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel engine pumping out 150 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, the Golf GTI hot hatch is a dream vehicle for those who want the best performance, power, and looks.

Germany vs. Portugal: Renault Mégane

Playing for Portugal is the Renault Mégane. While not produced in the country, the Mégane is extremely popular with Portuguese drivers. The hatchback is currently in its third generation and boasts low fuel consumption and a uniquely-styled exterior. In past generations the Mégane had somewhat of a… well, ass, which has been toned down in order to give the car a more streamlined look. The Mégane is also available as a coupe, convertible, or station wagon, and horsepower ranges from 100 in the 1.6-liter gasoline engine to 265 in the sporty 2.0-liter RS. The Mégane also comes with a choice of dirsel engines that maximize torque and provide higher mpg ratings.

These two cars are pretty evenly matched, but we’re going to have to give the edge to the VW Golf here. As for the real Germany vs. Portugal match, we’ll have to wait and see what happens when the two teams play today at 12 noon Eastern. Watch the action on ESPN.
