There’s a new member of the 2014 Ford Fusion Hybrid family with the addition of a more affordable S trim level. New features are also available, including inflatable rear seatbelts, a heated steering wheel, and ventilated front seats.

A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine comes together with an electric motor fed by a lithium-ion battery pack to power the Fusion Hybrid, creating 188 horsepower. A front-wheel-drive system helps the hybrid reach 60 mph from a standstill in 8.4 seconds, on par with the rest of the competition.

As you would expect with any hybrid, the fuel economy of the 2014 Fusion Hybrid is incredible with an EPA-estimated 47 mpg combined making it the best of any midsize hybrid sedan and only a few mpg lower than the popular Toyota Prius.

In government crash tests, the Fusion Hybrid received five out of five stars for overall crash protection, while the non-hybrid, but very similar Fusion received the highest possible rating of “Good” from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, showing that the Fusion Hybrid is likely to receive the same marks. Standard safety equipment for the hybrid sedan include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front seat side airbags, front knee airbags, and side curtain airbags. The Ford Sync system, which includes an emergency crash notification feature, is also standard along with Ford’s MyKey, which sets specific restrictions for teen drivers.
