During today’s Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) Gala Fundraiser, a 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray will be transformed into a Corvette art car, what Chevy calls a Corvette Canvas.
Three young GM designers will work on the Corvette art car: Casey Swanseger, Tyler Mars, and Haneif Katebi. They will have just 45 minutes to transform the Stingray, using acrylic, water-soluble paints. The Corvette in question is white vinyl-wrapped, making it the ideal canvas. A DJ will provide music while the artists work.
“Creativity is the basis of everything in life, from fine arts to innovation, from design to manufacturing,” explained Ed Welburn, GM vice president of Global Design, who is also serving as honorary chairman of the MOCAD gala. “What better way to demonstrate inspiration and creativity than by having these young GM designers, who helped create the new Corvette Stingray, transform it into an art car during this event.”
Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Peter Max, and other celebrated artists served as the inspiration for the Corvette art car project.
Elysia Borowy-Reed, Executive Director of MOCAD, stated, “There is a lot of creative energy in the city and helping our youth harness it early is essential to a vibrant Detroit and museum.”
