The New 2015 Honda Fit

The 2015 Honda Fit has earned a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, tying it with the 2014 Chevy Spark for the highest rated vehicle in its class. Both cars scored a highest possible “Good” rating on the head restraints and seats, roof strength, side, and front moderate overlap crash tests.

What separated the Honda Fit and Chevy Spark from the other subcompacts was their score on the new and challenging front small overlap crash test, which has proved especially difficult for minicars. 2014 models of the Ford Fiesta 4-door sedan and hatchback, Toyota Yaris 4-door hatchback, Kia Rio, and the Mazda 2 all received a less-than stellar “Marginal” rating on the front small overlap test, despite doing generally well on the other four tests. A step below them were 2014 models of the Mitsubishi Mirage, Nissan Versa 4-door sedan, Toyota Prius c, and the Hyundia Accent, which all received a lowest-possible “Poor” rating on the front small overlap test. The Chevy Spark and Honda Fit took top honors because they scored an “Acceptable” rating on the front small overlap test.

The Fit actually received a “Marginal” rating the first time that the IIHS tested early-production 2015 models, but Honda engineers redesigned the Fit’s front bumper and were rewarded for their efforts with a new “Acceptable” score.

Now Honda is voluntarily going back and updating roughly 12,000 pre-existing 2015 Honda Fit models with the safer front bumper. The auto manufacturer will be contacting customers who bought an early-production Fit that they may be eligible for a free bumper upgrade. Starting in late September, customers will be able to get more information on whether or not they are eligible by calling (800) 999-1009 and selecting option 4.
