Lexus has made one thing very clear with the release of the 2015 RC F: it’s looking to take a big bite out of BMW’s lunch. A true competitor to the M4, the RC F carries much of the requisite luxury that the Lexus brand would demand while providing a memorable 467 horsepower driving experience.

Granted, the 2015 RC F has the power edge over the M4 thanks to a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8, but that might be of some concern to those who demands respectable fuel efficiency from their sporty coupes. It shouldn’t be; Lexus has it all figured out.

Imagine a monstrous professional wrestler leaning casually on the ropes and talking calmly into the house mic while wearing a three-piece suit. When the wrestler with whom he’s feuding comes out and starts running him down at the top of the entrance ramp, the monster begins fuming. His voice steadily rises to a roar, and before you know it, he’s ripping that luxurious suit off to reveal the monster hiding beneath.

That’s kind of what the engine of the 2015 RC F is like: it’s steady at a cruise, running on the Atkinson cycle in order to keep fuel economy reasonable. Once more power is demanded, the Otto cycle kicks in, and all of the tricks Lexus engineers learned in building the LFA come into play.

In order to maximize the potential of the RC F, Lexus engineers took the V8 engine of the IS F, added new cylinder heads and lighter internal parts, and managed to increase both the max rpm to 7,100 and the compression ratio to 12.3:1.

Then, of course, there’s the matter of looks. The 2015 RC F is crisp, sporty, and it just looks like it’s a lot of fun to drive. As it turns out, this is a book that you can judge by its cover.
