The Formula One off-season certainly seemed shorter this time around. Wait — it was. There were only 85 days between the 2018 season finale and the official 2019 pre-season test, making this one of the shortest F1 winter breaks in history. And we won’t even have to wait that long to get a glimpse of the cars the teams have been hard at work on designing.

As is tradition, the majority of the teams will be revealing their new cars the week prior to the pre-season tests. Haas will lead the way with an online livery reveal almost a full week before the others, though it is believed they will only show the actual 2019 car once it has arrived at the Barcelona circuit for testing.

Toro Rosso will be the first team to actually show its new car, and a string of reveals by the other teams will follow. Expect a lot of speculation and analysis during this time — not only is this the way things usually go, as the teams always come up with interesting new designs and ideas over the winter, but this is also something of a special year.

The 2019 F1 season comes with a set of sweeping new aerodynamic regulations aimed at improving overtaking. Many of these changes have revolved around reducing the turbulence the cars leave in their wake as well reducing the sensitivity of the advanced front wings; in both cases, greatly simplifying or restricting aerodynamic complexity and therefore reducing downforce.

Many of the teams will have done all they can to regain as much of that lost downforce, working within the new regulations as much as possible but while also trying to discover any and all loopholes they can exploit. Regulation changes provide designers with a big chance to show their creativity, and getting a glimpse at that creativity for the first time is always an exciting moment.
