Located along the Rouge River on Detroit’s west side, the Cody Rouge neighborhood has been undergoing a positive transformation in the last few years. And during the week of August 15th, General Motors will be a part of that change, when 2,500 GM associates donate their time and efforts to board up vacant homes, clean up streets and empty lots, and help make other improvements to the community.

The effort is being led by teamGM cares, the company’s volunteerism initiative, which is partnering with Cody High School and the Cody Rouge Community Action Alliance (CRCAA) for this project. GM says that some of the corporation’s senior executives will be lending their hands and helping out alongside employees throughout the week.

Earlier this year, the CRCAA, GM, The Skillman Foundation, and residents of the Cody Rouge community have been working together to develop plans for addressing the area’s needs.

“Our organization has been working for 10 years to create a strong, sustainable community for residents and businesses,” says Kenyetta Campbell, CRCAA executive director. “We are excited to partner with GM to help amplify our work.”

For its part, GM will be providing Cody High with an improved fitness park, concession stand, dugout, soccer field, pavilion, and a thorough field cleaning.

“GM’s employees made great progress two years ago and now we are returning to work with residents and community leaders to create a safer, sustainable neighborhood where families and businesses can thrive,” said GM Community Outreach Director Heidi Magyar.

In addition to GM, other partners working in Cody Rouge include Quicken Loans, DTE Energy, PwC, Roncelli, Inc., Oak Pointe Church, and the aforementioned Skillman Foundation.

The week of work will end on August 20th with an Employee and Community Family Fun Day, during which GM employees will give neighborhood students backpacks filled with school supplies.
