The Hoosier State boasts quite a few festive places to visit during the holiday season to get in the Christmas mood. Here are three Indiana destinations you should definitely put on your itinerary.

Christmas at the Zoo

If you live in or near Indianapolis, you should definitely plan a twilight outing to the city’s zoo. From Nov. 23 through Dec. 30, the zoo hosts its annual Christmas at the Zoo light display. The Tunnel of Lights makes the perfect photo op. Young ones can visit with Santa and decorate treats to take home. Catch the Penguin Encounter from 6-8 p.m. to get a close look at these amazing birds and learn more about them. It’s worth noting that the event is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day, so plan your visit accordingly.

“A Merry Prairie Holiday”

Head to Conner Prairie in Fishers to experience the holiday traditions of the 1800s. Learn more about how Civil War-era soldiers celebrated Christmas during the war, get serenaded by carolers, and hear a live reading of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” Children will enjoy the Kringle’s Carousel, visiting Mrs. Claus, and going snow tubing, among other age-appropriate activities. This year’s “A Merry Prairie Holiday” event will also include a lights display, courtesy of a generous donation from Reynolds Farm Equipment.

Winterlights

Catch this year’s third annual Winterlights event at Newfields from Nov. 23 through Jan. 5. Stay cozy with hot cocoa or apple cider as you and your loved ones wander through the outdoor light displays. View a synchronized light display to holiday music on the Lilly House lawn, then step inside to peruse the decorated interior of the historic house and floral arrangements.

Make sure to check out these holiday light drive-thru displays in Indiana, if you’re in need of more seasonal destinations to explore this winter.
