Recently, we debunked a few EV-related myths. Here are a few more notions that many consumers have about these vehicles, and their rebuttals.

Myth #1: Plug-in hybrid vehicles are often more affordable than electric vehicles.

2019 Chevrolet Volt

It’s true that some plug-in hybrid models are significantly cheaper than EV models. For instance, the Chevy Volt model’s starting price is $33,520 while the Bolt model’s starting price is $36,620. However, that trend should shift in the near future. Per Green Car Reports, lithium battery prices are dropping so rapidly that EVs will have a lower manufacturing and selling cost than PHEVs by as early as 2025.

Myth #2: If you drive an EV,  you have a higher risk of getting stranded when the battery dies.

Roadside Assistance

Some consumers think that they’re more likely to get stranded in a tunnel or in the countryside if they’re driving an EV. However, the risk of getting stranded in an EV should be about the same as getting stranded in a non-EV, according to Green Car Reports. Owners of gas-powered cars learn the vehicle’s range and get in the habit of refueling when the fuel indicator indicates that the engine is running low on gas. The same is true of EV owners. They learn the electric range of their vehicle and avoid letting the car’s battery get dangerously low before they visit a charging station.

Myth #3: As more consumers buy EVs, the mass influx in EV models will overwhelm and disrupt the electric grid.

This myth is definitely unfounded. In fact, the opposite is true. Utility executives view EVs’ demand on the grid as predictable and manageable. It’s also one of the few ways they can increase electricity usage in an eco-friendly way. As Green Car Reports expresses, most consumers with EVs will recharge them overnight. This overnight plug-in time will help stabilize the electric grid. Additionally, many utility companies are talking about implementing cost penalties to encourage EV owners to recharge their cars outside of peak-demand times. This will further balance the electric grid.
