The World’s Largest Chest of Drawers

High Point is home to many talented people, including American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino and Taking Back Sunday lead singer Adam Lazzara. However, the city is also known as the Home Furnishings Capital of the World. As such, the World’s Largest Chest of Drawers sits on Hamilton Street, just 1 mile from High Point University. The 19th century cabinet, which has been a point of historical pride for the city since 1926, is 36 feet tall and features two non-matching socks spilling out of one of the drawers, symbolizing High Point’s hosiery industry.

Landlocked Lighthouse

Those with a fear of the ocean, or water in general, will be delighted to know they can visit a lighthouse without having to get near any body of water. In Bath, a red and white landlocked lighthouse stands boldly in an open field on the corner of Creek Road and Elliot Road. Standing at approximately 40 feet tall, the nautical landmark oversees a nearby creek, although there likely won’t be much danger to look out for in that area.

World’s Largest Ten Commandments

North Carolina sits right along the Bible Belt, an informal area of the U.S. where conservative evangelical Protestantism plays a large role in society and politics. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the small town of Murphy is home to the Fields of the Wood religious park, as well as the World’s Largest Ten Commandments. The rural area has many rolling hillsides, one of which is home to the 300-foot-wide landmark. While you’re visiting, be sure to also check out the many other religious monuments and spiritual markers.
