Museum of Colorado Prisons

Museum of Colorado Prisons in Cañon City was formerly a women’s prison built in 1935. Today, however, it’s a historical site open to public tours. Learn more about the facility’s history while keeping your eyes peeled for a sight of one of the building’s ghosts. Some visitors have reported seeing glowing orbs, smelling the scent of tobacco smoke, and hearing muted voices.

Gold Camp Rail Tunnels

Colorado Springs is a popular place for specters, especially if you visit the Gold Camp Rail Tunnels. These nine tunnels dating from the 1800s were once used during the Gold Rush. Since then, three of the tunnels have collapsed, while the others have been renovated for automotive use. The phantoms that haunt this area are purportedly from the children who were victims of a bus crash when one of the tunnels collapsed. You might also hear and see signs of the spirits of construction workers who perished while building the tunnels.

St. Elmo Ghost Town

Located in Chaffee County, St. Elmo is just one of the state’s many abandoned mining towns. Explore the former shops of the ghost town while learning about the history of its residents. You might also witness the ghost of Annabelle Stark, one of the town’s original inhabitants who settled there in the late 1800s. Legend has it that Annabelle left town to get married, then mysteriously returned shortly after, alone. To this day, it’s said that her ghost guards the town against harm.

Cripple Creek

Head to the base of Pikes Peak to peruse the remains of another ghost town, Cripple Creek. This former mining town is a great place to grow your knowledge about the area’s mining history, as well as their local spooks. Buffalo Billy’s Casino and Colorado Grande Casino are two primary places to hunt for ghosts. The former is reportedly haunted by a girl phantom who throws bar glasses through the air and draws on the walls. The latter is home to Maggie, a rose-scented Irish woman who plays the casino’s slots at night.
