Hell’s Gate
According to Indiana folklore, Hell’s Gate in Diamond/Brazil, Indiana, is not just a historical tunnel — it’s one of the seven entrances to Hell located in Wabash Valley. Per The Indy Channel, visitors have reported seeing the ghosts of those who perished when a train derailed on top of the tunnel’s gate. Some witnesses claim they’ve seen a spectral gatekeeper standing on top of the tunnel.
Highland Lawn Cemetery
Highland Lawn Cemetery in Terre Haute sprawls over 139 acres and is characterized by cryptic constructions like weeping angels and mausoleums. Per Thrillist, the cemetery is also home to the Stiffy Green, the ghost of a dog who visited and guarded his owner John Heinl’s tomb until the day he died. Though the cemetery staff buried Stiffy beside his master, some visitors claim that they’ve heard the phantom’s bark.
Willard Library
Willard Library is a favorite spot for Evansville bookworms to frequent. The Gothic Revival building provides a sophisticated environment conducive for reading — and witnessing the site’s infamous ghost known as the Grey Lady. Custodians, police officers, librarians, and patrons have claimed they’ve experienced signs of this apparition, from the scent of perfume to moving books and furniture.
Washington Hall
University of Notre Dame’s Washington Hall is a popular place to catch a lecture or student-led theatrical production. Though, some visitors stop by for a chance to witness the apparition of legendary Notre Dame football star George Gipp. To this day, some witnesses still report hearing unusual music, footsteps, and opening/closing doors.
