If you’ve ever locked your keys inside of your vehicle, you know how frustrating (and inconvenient) it can be. Here are five tips to avoid getting locked outside of your auto.

1. Lock it from the outside

Make a habit of holding onto your keys until you exit the vehicle. Then ( and only then), lock the door while you’re standing outside of it.

2. Use a lanyard or a carabiner

Invest in a lanyard or carabiner to attach your keys to every time you shut the engine off and before you leave the vehicle. This will minimize the likelihood that you’ll leave the keys on the front-passenger seat or accidentally drop them in some nook of the cabin while gathering your belongings and exiting your vehicle.

3. Keep a spare key on yourself

Have a spare key made and keep it in your purse, wallet, or in a pocket at all times. An extra key will eliminate the necessity of calling a locksmith to regain entry to your vehicle.

4. Give a spare key to a friend

Entrust an additional spare key to a trustworthy friend. Just make sure this friend lives near you, so they’ll be within driving distance if you need them to bring you the key.

5. Hide a spare key on the vehicle

Stash a spare key on the outside of your vehicle in one of the products available specifically made for this purpose. Make sure to hide it in a discreet place that you’ve chosen after careful thought and consideration, not one of the first places you think of. If the spare is easy for you to find, it’s probably easy for a thief to find it as well.
