Chevrolet is marking the 50th anniversary of the Malibu and the release of the new-for-2014 model with a retrospective that studies all eight generations and compares the latest Malibu to the first one created back in 1964.
The 2014 Malibu comes with a standard 2.5L 4-cylinder engine that can put down 196 horsepower; by comparison, the 1964 Malibu had a 3.2L inline-six that only generated 120-hp. The original Malibu debuted as Chevrolet’s “intermediate” car, becoming one of the first midsize cars in America.
A comprehensive list of Malibu generations (and a disheartening reminder that gas was $.30 a gallon fifty years ago) is available at GM’s News page and covers all of the bases: from the muscle of the 1966 Malibu SS to the 1973 model like the one driven by Ryan Gosling in Drive; from the fifth generation re-launch that won Motor Trend’s Car of the Year in 1997 to the 2008 North American Car of the Year at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
Are you a seasoned Malibu driver who proudly drove one of those old classics, or a newer convert looking to share a story? Help us celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Malibu and let us know what makes it special to you!
