SkyActiv Chassis for 2016 MX-5 Debuts in New York
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the MX-5’s initial unveiling at the Chicago Auto Show, and Mazda did not hold back on the celebration at today’s unveiling at the New York Auto Show. In fact, Mazda even brought along part—yes, just a part—of the all-new 2016 MX-5 Miata to mark the occasion: the SkyActiv Chassis for the fourth-generation Miata.
“This SKYACTIV CHASSIS expresses a deep-dive chronicle – complete with beginning, middle and conclusion – of the passion, challenges and triumphs being poured into the next-generation MX-5 Miata,” commented Robert Davis, senior vice president, U.S. Operations, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO). “The dedication of the R&D and Design teams to honor the vehicle’s dynamic heritage and globally-recognizable features is evident from the chassis’ structural blueprint, and will undoubtedly translate into what we believe will be a remarkable production car.”
Reportedly, this SkyActiv Chassis marks the very first time that the SkyActiv technology has made its way onto a front mid-ship engine rear-wheel-drive design. Mazda also reports that the compact configuration of the chassis puts the engine closer to the center of the vehicle, allowing for a lower center of gravity.
As expected, the 2016 MX-5 will be as nimble, compact, and fun-to-drive as its predecessors, but more information will be made available closer to the actual launch of the model.
