2016 Mercedes-AMG GT Debuts At Last
The slow unveiling of the 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT has come to a close with the full monty this afternoon, and like the ultimate performance of the gentleman in the 1997 film the end result is titillating, exciting, and feels more than a little bit naughty. Porsche, you have been put on notice.
“With the new Mercedes-AMG GT, we are venturing out into a challenging sports car segment with its top-class competitive field. This is an incentive and motivation for us at the same time to prove to sports car enthusiasts around the world the kind of performance that AMG is capable of”, says Prof Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research & Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.
The release of the 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT will be staggered into two phases: first, we will receive the GT S in the spring of next year. It will be powered by the obscene 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine to the tune of 503 horsepower at 6350 rpm and 479 lb-ft of torque. That should equal out to a top speed of 193 mph and a 3.7 second 0-60mph time.
The 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT will then launch sometime during 2016, powered by the same dry-sump V8 for an impressive 456 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. Both the GT and GT S come with the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with locking differential.
This little two-seater should be a hit with fans of the 300SL given features such as the single-bar grille intersected by the Mercedes star and a domed roof. If the Mercedes-AMG GT were to also be offered with gullwing doors, it might just cause people to melt.
