The first Chinese-made Jeep Cherokee just rolled off the assembly line at the Changsha assembly plant

Back in July, we learned that the Jeep Cherokee is going global, joining forces with the Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) to bring the popular model to China. Now, the move is official—the first Chinese-manufactured Jeep Cherokee has finally rolled off the assembly line.

The Jeep Cherokee has a few tweaks for the Chinese market. It is currently available with a 2.4-liter engine, with a 2.0-liter engine being offered later, once the model kicks off. Prices range between RMB200,000 and RMB300,000, which is the equivalent of $31,465 to $47,190. The Cherokee is being produced at the Changsha plant and is expected to reach full production next month, with deliveries starting before the end of the year.

“The Jeep brand was the first western automaker to produce vehicles in China more than 30 years ago,” said Mike Manley, Head of Jeep Brand and Ram Brand for FCA Global and the COO of the APAC region. “Today, with the support of our GAC partners, our brand is back to its rightful place in this market. The Jeep Cherokee is our best-selling vehicle worldwide and now is being produce in China for China, to the world quality standards that Chinese consumers demand.”

GAC Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles will expand the brand’s portfolio by the end of 2016, offering three new models including the Cherokee and the Jeep Renegade. The third model will likely be the successor to the Patriot and Compass, which we just learned about earlier this week.
