Alexander Rossi dominated the REV Group Grand Prix at Road America this weekend, leading all but one of the 55 laps to score his second win of the 2019 IndyCar Series.

Rossi started second behind Honda rookie Colton Herta, but swept pass him in the third corner of the first lap and never looked back from there. Before the first round of pit stops he had extended his lead to eight seconds; by the second round it was 16 seconds, and by the end it was a whopping 28. He only briefly surrendered the lead during the final pit stop on lap 40 because Graham Rahal, another Honda driver, stayed out for an extra lap before his own stop.

“Man, I mean, after thinking about it a bit, I think that was the best race car today I’ve ever driven,” Rossi said afterward. “It was a win we needed.  We’ve been there or thereabouts, but the other guys were getting the upper hand on us. To be able to go out and win a race the way we did stated our intentions.”

Rossi is now second in the driver standings, only seven points behind leader Josef Newgarden, who finished third at Road America. Honda had been off to a strong start to the 2019 season with three wins on the trot by the fourth race, but Chevrolet had a good run since. With Rossi’s win, the two manufacturers are now tied with five wins each, though Honda currently leads the standings with 826 points to Chevrolet’s 754 with seven rounds still to go. Seven of the top 10 at Road America were Honda drivers.
