“Move Over” law in Arizona counts toward all disabled vehicles.

You are coming up on a car off to the side of the road with its hazard blinkers on. What is your initial reaction?

If it is to move into another lane away from the vehicle, then the state of Arizona is proud of you and will award you a medal.

Never Too Soon: For getting your car ready for an Arizona road trip

Roads are extra busy during the holiday season, so Arizona wants to remind its residents of its “Move Over” law.

This regulation covers more than emergency vehicles — it includes every vehicle. When you see flashing lights on the left or right side of the road in Arizona, you must merge into an inside lane. What is common courtesy elsewhere is law of the land here.

After an increase in fatal crashes, this rule went into effect in 2005 for first responders. It was later amended in 2011 to include all vehicles. Its purpose is to deter tragedies like the one on June 4, 2016 that took the life of tow-truck driver Danny Haro. It never hurts to remind the public that this law exists for a reason.

AAA reports that one tow-truck dies every six days and over 100 people lose their lives responding to car accidents in America.

Here Are: Some tips on how to best drive in the dark

If you are one of the 2 million Arizonians that will be driving this holiday season, be aware of the sides of the road, and give other vehicles space. Unless you are getting off at the next exit or passing someone, the best practice is to stay in the center lane.
