The BMW 2 Series Coupe

If the good people of Bimmerpost are to be believed (and they do have their ways, after all), the BMW M2 has been given the go-ahead and will begin production sometime in the fall of 2015. The BMW M2 bears the codename “pyrat2,” which echoes the codename for the BMW 1M coupe, “pyrat.” Pyrat, for those of you unaware, is the name of a special kind of spiced rum that BMW engineers particularly enjoy. Because BMW engineers are the best.

It’s said that the BMW M2 would arrive sporting somewhere in the range of 365 to 375 horsepower with a spruced-up N55 turbocharged inline-six.

Bimmerpost also reports that a modified version of the inline-four turbo engine found in the MINI Cooper S was being considered before the N55 was ultimately decided upon. The codename for the engine—S48—would have served as an allusion to another BMW great: the E30 M3.

The “pyrat2” codename, however, suggests that the BMW M2 is going to be a straight-up successor to the 1M Coupe, though Auto Blog suggests that the production run for the M2 wouldn’t be nearly as limited as that of the 1M.

Of course, this is all pretty much conjecture at this point, but it’s reason enough to feel just a pang or two of excitement. Go on. Let it go. There it is.

We feel as though Bimmerpost user “M3 Adjuster” says it best: “Not making an M2 would have been the dumbest decision ever by BMW AG. Ridiculous that this Is even a thread topic. OF COURSE there will be an M2. The only question that remains is will it outsell the M4?!”

Stay tuned for any official word as to whether we can expect the BMW M2 sometime in our future. Until then: do you think the BMW M2 would outsell the M3 and M4?
