Ahead of its September 10 Frankfurt debut, BMW has released the first teaser video and two official images for the new BMW i8 car.  The indelible first impression is one of style, sophistication, power, and innovation.

The i8 production car appears to be quite similar to the prototype concept that bowed back in 2011, though the teaser video does its best to shroud the hybrid supercar in secrecy, displaying it in brief flashes against a dark show room and roaring down a starlit desert road.

The official images, on the other hand, are a bit more straightforward.  One shows the i8’s profile from driver’s side, giving a full look at the sleek, silver body with blue and black accents and alloy wheels.  Of particular note are the switchblade doors, which have changed from the see-through, almost wing-like doors of the concept.

The second image gives a glimpse of the i8’s interior, which continues the silver/black/blue aesthetic with very pronounced design language, a digital gauge cluster, what appears to be a touchscreen infotainment display, and a pronounced center console dividing passenger and driver’s seats.

The 2014 i8 has been tested to go from zero to sixty-two miles per hour in an impressive 4.5 seconds, has a max electronic-only speed of 155 mph, and will provide low-emission, high-performance driving thanks to a 1.5L 3-cylinder TwinPower Turbo gasoline engine mated to a 6-speed transmission box and a 96 kW electric motor mated to a 2-speed transmission.

With these teases, BMW has managed to further pique interest in its supercar with Frankfurt looming, leaving an adoring public wanting more.
