Buick Velite 6 EV and Hybrid Models Coming to China

Buck is introducing two Velite 6 models to China: a plug-in hybrid and an EV

Buick is capitalizing on the brand’s popularity in China and responding to demand for high-efficiency vehicles by introducing a pair of new electric models: the Velite 6 plug-in hybrid and the Velite 6 EV.

The Velite models are based on Buick’s Velite Concept vehicle that was introduced in November 2016. Each will incorporate Buick’s eMotion electric propulsion technology. The hybrid model will include a high-performance propulsion system for increased performance, range, and fuel efficiency. The EV model will get a new battery electric drivetrain.

Like the Velite Concept, the new Velite models feature designs with rippling curves and flowing lines, along with a wing-shaped grille and matrix LED headlights. The design, by engineers at the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center, was inspired by water and traditional Chinese culture.

The Velite 6 is part of the “Buick Blue” strategy to bring more green driving options to the Chinese market

Information about performance and interior features for the two Velite 6 models hasn’t been released yet. However, the Velite Concept included a sensor-driven 360-degree intelligent traffic system with multiple safety features, so there’s a strong possibility that will be included on the new Velites.

The new Velites are part of the “Buick Blue” strategy to bring more green driving options to the Chinese market. Other electrified models in Buick’s China lineup include the Regal Hybrid, the LaCrosse Hybrid, and the Velite 5 extended range EV.

For the first two months of 2018, Buick sold almost 200,000 vehicles in China compared with fewer than 30,000 in the U.S. Because China is the world’s largest market for Buicks, GM is introducing electric and hybrid models there under the Buick name instead of under the Chevy Bolt and Volt nameplates.
