De Nysschen Confirms Cadillac’s Support of Diesel Development

2016 Cadillac CT6

Will the Cadillac CT6 be offered with a diesel engine?

Despite the Volkswagen scandal, Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen says that the brand will not back down from its plans to build a family of new, efficient diesel engines for its vehicles. In fact, de Nysschen confirmed once again that its four-cylinder and six-cylinder diesels will not just be available in European markets where they are likely to be popular alternatives, but also in the United States.

“From where we sit, a well-executed diesel engine is still a very cost-effective route to achieve (CO2) emissions reductions,” de Nysschen told WardsAuto in an interview. “But the emphasis will be on well-executed. That doesn’t mean it is cheap. That’s part of the problem. It costs money to contain those engines. But it is an undeniable truth that a diesel engine is more efficient than a gasoline engine.”

De Nysschen admitted that the image of diesel technology “has suffered a punch in the face” in the wake of the Volkswagen emissions scandal, but he iterated that plans moving forward call for Cadillac’s new diesel engines to be dropped in sedans, SUVs, and crossovers.

Interestingly, de Nysschen also confirmed interest in building a fuel-cell vehicle in order to position Cadillac as being on the cusp of alternative fuel vehicles.
