Hyundai recently hired former Nissan executive Jose Munoz as its new global chief operating officer and head of American markets.

Munoz possesses three decades of experience in the auto industry. He’ll draw from this background to implement the Korean automaker’s strategies around the world and oversee North, Central, and South American operations. He’ll also be expected to boost the company’s sales, increase its profitability, and carry out the company’s continuing reorganization of international operations.

“Jose Munoz has an impressive track record and is proven to be a visionary and motivational leader who is adept at all aspects of our business,” said Hyundai Motor Company President Wonhee Lee. “His decades of automotive and technology experience make him well suited for this new role as we move the company to the next step.”

Munoz will start work at Hyundai on May 1. He’ll be based in Fountain Valley, California.

“I am excited to join Hyundai Motor at this vital time in its history,” he said. “My capabilities around delivering steady profitable growth, managing the entire supply chain, and working together with our dealer partners to find win-win solutions match up well with the opportunity here.”

Munoz is a native of Spain. Before joining Hyundai, he worked at Nissan for 15 years. Positions he held there included Chief Performance Officer, chairman of Chinese operations, chairman of North American operations, and general manager for Europe. Prior to his years with Nissan, Munoz worked in Europe for Toyota, Daewoo, and Citroen.
