Cadillac is hard at work developing a range of new electric models, and the first one could arrive in just a few years.

According to a report from Cadillac Society, the luxury brand plans to release its first dedicated EV model sometime in 2022.

With luxury SUV sales on the rise and sedan sales declining, it would make sense for Cadillac to make its first EV a more profitable crossover, and that appears to be exactly what the brand is doing.

So far, details about this new EV are sparse, although it’s expected to take a similar approach as luxury crossover models like the Tesla Model X and Audi e-Tron.

Another look at Cadillac’s unnamed EV

Earlier this year at the Detroit Auto Show, Cadillac showed renderings of a sleek, as-yet-unnamed electric crossover that could be the rumored Cadillac-first EV.

Cadillac said the crossover teased in Detroit would be the brand’s first vehicle to use the all-new BEV3 EV platform. Engineers are developing this flexible architecture to be used for a range of vehicle types, battery output requirements, and drivetrains (including RWD, FWD, and AWD).

We already know of at least one other confirmed Cadillac EV (although this one might arrive on a different platform). The next-generation Escalade, which will show up for the 2021 model year, will eventually offer an all-electric variant.

It’s not clear when this model will first become available, but engineers are hoping to give it a driving range exceeding 400 miles.
