Even after 50 years on the market, the Mustang is still capable of learning some new tricks. In addition to a number of new features for the sixth-gen model, the upcoming Mustang will be the first to be sold in international markets in a factory-built right-hand drive configuration. The right-hand-drive Mustang will be available later this year in more than 25 markets, including the U.K., Australia, and South Africa.
Ford’s engineers have finished the prototype version of the first right-hand-drive Mustang and are preparing to conduct development testing with it over the coming months to ensure that the production version is up to the company’s high standards.
Surprisingly enough, only 161,000 Mustangs have ever been sold outside of North America in its 50 year history. 2012 marked a banner year for the namebadge with 4,000 Mustangs sold in 35 different countries outside of North America.
The advent of a right-hand-drive Mustang is consistent with the One Ford plan and the company’s plans to make the Mustang the go-to pony car the world over. Recently, Ford announced that it would be shutting down production in Australia and ending the famous Falcon line in order to increase Mustang imports.
When it eventually hits the market, the 2015 Mustang will be available in more than 110 countries around the world. Get ready, folks. It’s coming.
