Since its introduction in 2012, the Ford 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine has been on a real tear not just with customers, but with experts and critics. Over that time, the small and efficient EcoBoost has racked up 11 International Engine and Powertrain of the Year awards, including its most recent: the 2019 IEPOTY award in the Sub-150 PS (148 horsepower) category.

The 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder is available in a wide range of Ford vehicles, including the Fiesta, Focus, EcoSport, and Transit Connect. Ford says that variants of the 1.0-liter accounted for the engine choice in around 25 percent of all vehicles sold in 2018 at around 410,000 units.

“The 1.0-liter EcoBoost continues to set new benchmarks for compact petrol engines, even seven years and 11 awards after its first International Engine and Powertrain of the Year victory,” said Carsten Weber, manager, Research and Advanced Powertrain Engineering, Ford of Europe. “Even with 1.6 million 1.0-liter EcoBoost engines already on the road, we’re still uncovering its potential.”

The Sub-150 PS category is new for the 2019 IEPOTY awards, with categories for engine displacement now all replaced with categories for output. In the previous Sub 1.0-liter category, the EcoSport was the unchallenged champion between 2012-2017. In its debut year, the 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder also earned the overall title — a feat it would repeat in 2013 and 2014 — and the title of best new engine.

This year’s IEPOTY awards were determined by a panel of 70 judges from 31 countries. The judges gave the 1.0-liter EcoBoost its category win by a large margin with a total of 145 points—26 points more than the BMW TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder.
