Ford Investing $2.5 Billion in Mexico; Will Build Two New Manufacturing Plants

Ford Production Moves to Ohio

Ford announced on Friday that it will invest $2.5 billion to build a new engine plant in Chihuahua, Mexico and a new transmission plant in Guanjuato, Mexico. It is expected that this investment will result in the creation of at least 3,800 direct jobs and any number of indirect jobs to Mexico in the coming years.

The announcement was made Friday during a ceremony in Mexico City that was attended by Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and various members of the Mexican Federal Government.

“Ford is making a significant commitment to our business in Mexico with investment in two new facilities, while aiming to make our vehicles even more fuel-efficient with a new generation of engines and transmissions our team in Mexico will build,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s President of The Americas. “These new engines and transmissions will help deliver even better driving experiences and fuel economy gains for customers around the world.”

Chihuahua will serve as the home of a new $1.1 billion engine plant, which will be responsible for creating gasoline-powered engines that will be exported to the US, Canada, South America, and Asia-Pacific. It is expected that this plant will create 1,300 new jobs directly.

Additionally, Ford’s $1.2 billion transmission plant will be located in the City of Irapuato in the State of Guanajuato, and it will produce two all-new automatic transmissions “for key products primarily in South America, Europe and Asia Pacific as well as other North American markets.”

The remaining $200 million will be dedicated to creating 500 more new jobs at Ford’s current engine plant in Chihuahua, which will be the biggest in all of Mexico after the additions are made.

At present, Ford has 11,300 employees in Mexico, where it produces such vehicles as the Ford Fiesta, Fusion and Lincoln MKZ.
