Ford Motor Company Executive Chairman Bill Ford will be visiting Israel in June, and sources say that he will announce a new Research and Innovation Center in Tel Aviv. Ford will take part in the four-day EcoMotion conference in June, which gathers together Israeli tech companies and startups alongside reps from the auto industry.

The rumor sprung up in Calcalist, which focuses on technology and innovation in Israel. According to CTech’s sources, Bill Ford’s visit is a purposed one that will see him scouting the country for technologies related to the company’s Smart Mobility ambitions — namely, electrification, autonomous driving, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. The source established that Ford already has plans to meet with reps from Karamba Security Ltd., which focuses on cybersecurity, and Mobileye, an Intel subsidiary which makes the Mobileye Advanced Driver Assistance System.

But beyond the acquisition of partners, it’s said that Ford will announce a new Research and Innovation Center for Tel Aviv. Ford responded to Calcalist’s request for comment on Ford’s role at EcoMotion by confirming an event in Tel Aviv on June 12, and the outlet’s source confirmed that the plan for the event is to announce the innovation center proper.

Ford in 2016 acquired Israeli-based SAIPS Ltd. for the development of autonomous vehicle modules, and in 2018 added a $12.5 million investment to support the effort. SAIPS is a developer of algorithmic solutions, an area that is key for autonomous vehicles to monitor and adapt to surroundings.
