Introduction
Ford has led the charge in America’s obsession with SUVs through the 90s and 2000s, and at the front of the automaker’s lineup has been the Ford Explorer. Since its introduction nearly 25 years ago, the Explorer has grown to become a household name and one of the most popular SUVs on the road today.
Early History
The first generation of the Ford Explorer was introduced in 1990 and was created to replace the outgoing Bronco II. At the time, the Explorer was powered by a 155 horsepower V6 that was manufactured in Germany. Since then, the Explorer has seen five generations with the most recent being marked by a complete redesign in 2011 that brought a sleeker exterior design and bolstered fuel economy.
Recent History
Much like the rest of Ford’s larger vehicle offerings, the Explorer now offers EcoBoost engines, which utilize turbocharging to get the most performance out of smaller engines, while maximizing efficiency. Innovative new features like intelligent access, adaptive cruise control, active park assist, the MyFord Touch with SYNC infotainment system, and Apple iTunes tagging help the Explorer continue to attract new customers in every demographic.
