If you live somewhere where finding an available parking spot can be a real hassle, Ford hears you and is hard at work on a solution. Ford and Vodafone are working on a connected-vehicle technology called Parking Space Guidance Technology that will tell drivers how many spaces are open nearby and how you can get to them. Yeah, that’s the stuff right there.

“Parking Space Guidance is a connected‑vehicle technology that could help drivers to more quickly complete their journey, saving them money, time, and benefitting overall air quality,” said Ford of Europe Product Development engineer Tobias Wallerius.

The system would update in real-time based on data pulled from parking lots. This would tell drivers when a spot is filled or suddenly becomes available, cutting down on the amount of time spent prowling parking lots or looping city streets looking for curb space.

“When vehicles can exchange data with infrastructure in real-time, traffic will become more intelligent, searching for a parking space will become less stressful and people will get to their destination more quickly,” said Michael Reinartz, Head of Innovation, Vodafone.

Parking Space Guidance is the latest development to come out of the Kooperative Mobilität im digitalen Testfeld Düsseldorf program, or KoMoD, which has been testing out connected vehicle and autonomous technologies in Germany. Previous developments from Ford and Vodofone include the Traffic Light Assistance System, which reduces the amount of time spent waiting at red lights, and an eCall Plus system, which helps create emergency corridors for emergency vehicles in the event of an accident.
