Ford R&E Goes Zero-to-Landfill

Ford Research and Engineering Center has gone landfill free

Ford has announced that its Dearborn, Michigan Research and Engineering Center has gone landfill free. The R&E Center covers 720 acres and houses more than 12,000 employees through 24 different buildings. The move to make the center landfill free is a considerable step in its goal to cut total waste-to-landfill by 40% per vehicle produced worldwide by 2016.

“Our global waste strategy commits Ford to reducing waste-to-landfill, and we have made great progress at our manufacturing plants,” said Andy Hobbs, Ford Motor Company director, Environmental Quality Office. “We are now extending this effort to our office and research facilities, and are proud to recognize the Research & Engineering Center for sending zero waste-to-landfill.”

Components of making Ford Motor Company Research and Engineering Center landfill free include a comprehensive categorization of waste streams from smallest to largest. This allowed managers to determine the best methods for cutting waste without requiring additional costs. This helped result in the diversion of 230,000 pounds of waste from landfills every year, bringing the total reduction of to-landfill waste over the past five years to 50%.

In total, 30 Ford facilities—including all facilities in Canada and Mexico—are completely landfill free.
