Automobiles are constantly evolving. From advancements in safety features and upgrades to infotainment tech to engineering breakthroughs and redesigns, vehicles are amazing works in progress. But with all the advancements, there are a few notable inventions that can be used to define the “modern car.” Here’s a look at four such innovations according to Popular Mechanics writer Blake Z. Rong.

An exterior element most drivers probably don’t consider an innovation but is instrumental in improving aerodynamics are enclosed fenders, writes Rong. Enclosed fenders are also key to minimizing annoying road noise and road vibrations.

“A safety feature that’s not only taken for granted, but is also nearly invisible to a car’s occupants — until it saves their lives. Crumple zones originated in the ’50s with the notion that a rigid car isn’t enough. The front and rear deform in a crash to absorb all of the impact, spreading it away from the passenger compartment,” he reports.

Supporting the innovation of crumple zones is the evolutions made to metal.

“Advancements in metallurgy have given carmakers specific blends of high-strength steel that are easy to stamp and weld, resistant to corrosion, fire, or impact, and weigh less while retaining their strength,” writes Rong.

One feature that makes driving a bit easier on long drives is the innovation of adaptive cruise control, adds Rong. Adaptive cruise control measures the distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. Not only do modern cruise controls measure distance, advanced systems can automatically adjust speed or engage the brakes when necessary.
