Chevrolet Vietnam is continuing its mission of bringing joy into the lives of children with facial deformities by supporting Operation Smile Vietnam for a fifth year. The program provides free screenings and corrective surgery for 50 Vietnamese children born with deformities such as cleft palate and cleft lip, all of which will be provided in 2018 by the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital from Nov. 30-Dec. 4.

“For Chevrolet and General Motors, one of our core principles is to act as a responsible corporate citizen in the communities in which we operate. We are committed to serving and contributing to the development of those communities. We want to make a difference in people’s lives,” said John Willis, Aftersales Director, GM Vietnam. “Seeing the tremendous transformation that Operation Smile has brought to the lives of children and their families over the last five years, we are very proud to be part of this great mission.“

General Motors has been a participant in Operation Smile Vietnam since 2013, during which time more than 250 children have had their facial deformities diagnosed and corrected free of charge. In 30 years, Operation Smile Vietnam has performed corrective surgery on more than 44,000 patients.

The importance of addressing these issues is paramount, as they can lead to issues as wide and varied as hearing loss and malnutrition and leave those affected with the social side effects of bullying and abuse. A child with cleft condition is born approximately every 3 minutes, and the nature of poverty and economic disparity around the world leaves nearly 5 billion affected individuals without the means necessary to address their conditions.

This year, GM Vietnam employees also performed volunteer duties in the Son La province, bringing underprivileged children food and cloths while also building three playgrounds from recycled materials.
