According to a survey commissioned by the software firm ANSYS, seven out of ten respondents have some pretty high hopes for autonomous vehicles. Specifically, 71 percent of survey-takers think that self-driving cars will outperform human drivers within a decade. Here’s a deeper look at what the survey revealed.

Shocking statistics

The ANSYS survey polled 22,041 adults in 11 major global markets, including the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Japan, India, and France. Their responses revealed some interesting global trends about consumer optimism, as well as concerns about safety.

Japan’s enthusiasm for AVs: Of the people surveyed, Japanese consumers were among the most optimistic — 38 percent of respondents feel that AVs are already better drivers than people, while 83 percent think AVs are on track to surpass people by 2029.

Stressing over safety: People have many reasons to be hesitant about adopting AVs. Technological failures are the number-one concern that 59 percent of respondent expressed about self-driving cars. Autonomous planes are even less trusted, with 65 percent of people fearing how algorithms would fare in the friendly skies.

Cultural differences: Of the Chinese respondents, 97 percent were willing to ride in a self-driving car at some point in their lifetimes. Of the markets surveyed, that makes China the most open to autonomous driving technology. UK consumers, on the other hand, are considerably more skeptical — only 57 percent would be comfortable getting shuttled around by a self-driving car.

Age and attitudes: Of the 18-to-24-year-olds and 25-to-34-year-olds who took the survey, over 87 percent expressed comfort with the idea of self-driving cars.
