GM has just announced that certain trims of the 2019 Sierra will incorporate a new Perimeter Lighting System. Now, this handsome pickup will have even more practicality to enhance its brawny good looks.

The new technology seems to be GMC’s version of the in-bed lighting function that Chevy offers on the Durabed version of the 2019 Silverado 1500. The goal is to provide greater illumination to the truck bed, as well as the immediate environment of the pickup. The technology will help brighten dark worksites, driveways, and camping grounds, to provide better visibility and safety for owners.

The Perimeter Lighting System is expected to use LED technology. We don’t yet know exactly what the technology will look like on the Sierra. But we do know that it uses eight different lights on eight distinct areas of the vehicle: within the tailgate handle cluster, as part of the reverse lights, within the rear corners of the bed, within the front section of the side mirrors, and within the CHMSL cluster above the rear glass. This should provide thorough lighting to make every night journey easier, whether you need to check your cargo or unload luggage from the cab and truck bed.

Like with many new packages and options, this one does come with some limitations. The Perimeter Lighting System will be available only for the top three trims of the Sierra — the SLT, AT4, and Denali. But, if you’ve already set your eye on one of these more high-tech, feature-laden versions this truck, then this innovative light system will be icing on the cake.
